Alex Zylka is a New York-based professional specializing in theatrical design, technical production, and production management. His work almost always takes him into the intersection of high technology, performance, and experiential design.
Alex’s work has led him to tour internationally (Athens, Berlin, Zürich) with Wu Tsang and Moved by the Motion’s Sudden Rise, collaborate on Juilliard Drama’s Major Barbara, and join forces with designer Tuce Yusak on projects including CONTRA-TIEMPO’s joyUS justUS, and Raja Feather Kelly’s Another Fucking Warhol Production.
Alex is the Assistant Director of Theater Operations & Manager of the Susan and John Hess Family Theater at The Whitney Museum of American Art, where he has worked closely with Biennial 2017, 2019, 2022, and 2024 artists including Debit, Sarah Hennies, Awilda Sterling-Duprey, Autumn Knight, nibia pastrana santiago, and Sahra Motalebi to adapt existing performances or create new, often site-specific works. He also supervises productions for the Whitney’s Performance and Education divisions, which have included screenings, lectures, and performances with Martine Gutierrez, Barbara Hammer, Taeyoon Choi, and Sybil Kempson & The 7 Daughters of Eve.
Previously, Alex served as Production Manager for performance and live events at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, he brought virtual and hybrid Educational programming (lectures, symposia, colloquia) to the Met’s ever-growing global audiences. Pre-pandemic he realized a joint production of Gertrude Stein’s The Mother of Us All with The Juilliard School and New York Philharmonic as well as performances with Baaba Maal, The Crossing, and Kent Monkman’s Miss Chief Eagle Testickle.
Before relocating to Manhattan, Alex was part of the production team at The Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC). He executed the vision of artists-in-residence using the wide range of technology available, expert staff, and state-of-the-art capabilities of EMPAC’s four venues. He had the privilege of designing, developing, premiering, or filming works with artists including Andrew Schneider, Jonah Bokaer, Toxe, Callie Spooner, Germaine Kruip, and Isabelle Pauwels.
